Boom Times Can be a Mixed Bag for Small Business

It’s said that a rising tide floats all boats. Over the next two decades, it appears British Columbia will be looking to the resource sector and heavy industry to bring that tide in, but it’s important the littlest vessels aren’t swamped in the process.

The narrative, “as goes mining/shipbuilding/forestry, so goes BC”, is an easy one for politicians. The reality is more complex: for small business owners, a booming economy can be a mixed bag.

Surrey Food Bank's 10th Annual 'Breakfast with the Bank'

On May 18, I had the opportunity to support the Surrey Food Bank's 10th Annual Breakfast With The Bank at Surrey's Bollywood Banquet Hall. The Surrey Food Bank brought together so many people who showed their support to this organization at 7 AM and raised a significant amount of money in such a short period of time.

Surrey's Tynehead Hatchery "Salmon Send Off"

Surrey's Tynehead Hatchery's 'Salmon Send off' event brought together community members and environmental supporters to support salmon steward volunteers in the region. The community has been invited for several years to help release salmon fry into the River and experience trout fishing in the hatchery's holding ponds.

Support NDP Call For A National Public Transit Strategy in Surrey

On April 27, 2012 I had the opportunity to attend and support NDP’s call for a national public transit strategy. Following the Conservative budget that provides no leadership on transit, Newton-North Delta MP Jinny Sims, Surrey-Newton MLA Harry Bains and I reiterated the NDP call for a National Public Transit Strategy at her constituency office.

Remember Those Who Lost Lives At Work

April 28 is recognized in Canada as a National Day of Mourning for women and men who have lost their lives on the job.

Each year, hundreds of workers are killed, thousands more are permanently disabled or die from work-related diseases.

Their loss and our sadness continue to be felt every day at work by coworkers, at home by loved ones and within our community by neighbours and friends.

March 21, 2012 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and I believe an important opportunity for British Columbians to celebrate our diversity and strengthen our commitment to eliminate racism and intolerance in our communities.

But in BC, Spring is bringing more turbulence and uncertainty to the Small Business sector.

BC Business Optimism fell in February to 64.9 from 69.3 in January (index levels between 65 and 75 indicate a growing economy).

BC’s business confidence level dropped below the national average for the first time in 16 months, moving BC from the third most optimistic province in Canada to sixth place.

Budget 2012 - Small Business Reaction

The provincial government has unveiled a budget that provides some reassurance to BC’s small- and medium-sized businesses, while raising the unwelcome spectre of corporate tax increases and failing to honour the commitment to eliminate the small business tax rate.
