March 21, 2012 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and I believe an important opportunity for British Columbians to celebrate our diversity and strengthen our commitment to eliminate racism and intolerance in our communities.
We have made great progress eliminating the negative impacts which intolerance and ignorance cost our society. However there are still those who feel the effects of racism. Surrey continues to grow rapidly as does our cultural diversity and British Columbia remains one of the most multicultural provinces in Canada. Clearly discrimination, hate and cultural conflict divide and weaken our community and it is imperative that all of us diligently promote the principles of inclusion, respect and cooperation and help build an even stronger society.
I believe a community which embraces multiculturalism will be united, harmonious, peaceful, productive and prosperous. My dreams for future generations includes a society that evolved where an International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination no longer exists because it will no longer be necessary, racial discrimination will be eliminated. That will be a day to celebrate.
Sincerely,
