Editorial: Bruce Allen

Bruce Allen does not know a Kaur from a Khan.

But that did not stop this abrasive talk-show dunderhead from spewing his hate-filled message on radio station CKNW.

Allen, a self-proclaimed editorialist, recently took a swipe at new Canadians in one of his commentaries, ranting against the so-called “turban-wearing mountie problem,” the voting rights of veiled Muslim women and the controversy over Immigration Canada’s misguided notion of forcing Sikhs with the last names Singh and Kaur (according to Allen it is Khan) to change them.

The commentary lacked depth and research, was lazy and disrespectful and was meant to pander to those losers who fear Canada is being taken over by the brown and yellow.

Allen seems to think his idiotic suggestions add to right-minded discourse, but intead pillory people seeking change.

“If you choose to come to a place like Canada, then shut up and fit in,” Allen declared, adding: “There is the door. If you don’t like the rules, hit it. We don’t need you here. You have another place to go. It’s called home. See ya.”

To call Allen outspoken for his comments is giving this mealy motor-mouth too much credit.

He is outdated.

His remarks are laced with profound ignorance better suited for rants in a biker bar than thought-provoking editorials from a respected radio station.

It is fortunate that women got the right to vote and hold government office before Allen took to the airwaves.

They would most likely have been subjected to his “shut up and fit in” philosophy.

Allen, a music producer with the cell numbers of entertainment heavyweights like Bryan Adams and Michael Buble, has a history of propagating bigoted opinions in his bombastic, attention-seeking diatribes.

In 2000, his target was the First Nations people.

CFOX radio suspended him for allowing callers to paint natives as alcoholics and deadbeats after his myopic interpretation of a roadblock protest in Vernon.

Recently, Allen was chosen to be part of the Vancouver 2010 team that will lead the development of the Olympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and nightly Olympic Victory Ceremonies.

Games boss, John Furlong said, “our goal is to create spectacular ceremonies of which all Canadians can be proud.”

Indeed!

We can only wonder what Allen will have to say when the creative team tries to include the Chinese Lion parade, or the Bhangra and the native Spirit Dance in the ceremonies.

Allen, unrepentant, says he should not be punished for his opinions.

We agree.

It’s not the opinion that concerns us. We all know what Allen thinks of people who don’t “fit” in his world.

It’s those facts that Allen uses as the foundation of that opinion, which is transmitted widely and indiscriminately, that demand scrutiny.

Similarly, Allen’s rants should not be the sole focus of this nasty episode.

Attention should also be paid to the organizations and people who give this guy a podium top spew his maligned missives.

They must ensure that Allen has his facts straight before giving him free reign over the airwaves.

Otherwise it is better for all of us that Bruce Allen shut up and fit in.
