KATHMANDU, Nepal


Landslides and flash floods triggered by torrential monsoon rain across Nepal have killed at least 11 people. The country’s meteorological department said some places in southern and western Nepal had recorded up to 90 mm of rain in the past 24 hours triggering landslides and flash floods. Last year, at least 150 people died in landslides and flooding across Nepal with more than 250,000 people displaced from their homes.

NEW DELHI, India

 

An Afghan national of Indian origin was arrested for allegedly killing his younger brother’s wife after she rejected his sexual advances. The accused and his family had taken refuge in India in 1992. Sehgal runs a movie CD renting shop in Sultanpuri area. The police said Sehgal is one of four brothers. Bina, 21, was married to his youngest brother about a year ago. "Ever since the marriage of his younger brother, Naresh developed a liking for Bina," police said.

LUCKNOW, India


A smuggler was arrested with 5.5 kg of elephant tusk in the Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh. Police said that the suspect has been engaging in the smuggling of animal parts for the past few years and the tusk was brought from Jharkhand, Chauhan said. Police have some leads about the other persons involved in this trade and hope to make more arrests soon.

RAIPUR, India


Six persons, all in their early 20s, were arrested in Chhattisgarh on charges of diamond smuggling. Police arrested the youths and seized their Maruti van and also recovered diamonds worth $2,500 from their possession. They were coming from the diamond-rich belt of Raipur district’s Mainpur locality. Raipur district’s large Mainpur forest areas are confirmed diamond deposit areas.

 


 

AGRA, India

 

A 52-year-old man was allegedly pushed from the roof of his house by a group of people for objecting to their playing cricket on the street in front of his home in Uttar Pradesh. The man died due to the fall. According to the police, a group of people were playing cricket in a street in front of Fazludin’s house in Tajganj area when a ball hit him. He confronted the group and asked them not to play in the street. The mob allegedly attacked the victim’s family and in the scuffle he was pushed from the roof.

 

PUNJAB, India

 

The Punjab State government has asked principals and staff of government and private medical and nursing colleges to keep a strict check on the hazing, also called the ragging menace. Every institute is required to nominate a medical superintendent as the officer to check the menace. Several students have died in ragging incidents in the state.

AGRA, India
A freak tornado sucked up a pond’s water into the atmosphere, uprooted trees and razed crops in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district last weekend. The incident took place in Bhojpura village of Mainpuri district. An intense dark cloud built up suddenly, the air flow turned violent and within about 25 minutes it had uprooted trees, emptied the community pond and destroyed everything within the limits of Bhojpura village, 75 km from here. Environmental scientist K.S. Rana in Agra said that such a localized cyclonic movement had never been heard of before.

LUCKNOW, India
Over 3,000 criminals have been arrested across Uttar Pradesh as part of a special weekend operation. Raids were conducted at about 6,500 places to nab the criminals. The police arrested 1,535 wanted criminals and 1,653 criminals against whom non-bailable warrants were issued. Huge caches of illegal weapons and stolen goods were recovered during the raids. Twenty stolen vehicles, fake currency, and over 50 animals being smuggled to slaughter houses were among the items recovered.

 

GUJARAT, India

 

A group of 15 social organizations, demanding a thorough probe into the death of two boys from religious’ ashram, have called for a Gujarat shutdown this week. The boy’s parents and others suspect they had fallen victim to some black magic rituals. Last weekend a mob set fire to one city bus and damaged three others. It has been two weeks since the incident and the government has yet to make a formal announcement about the investigation.

DHAKA, Bangladesh


Noted Bangladeshi poet Samudra Gupta, a freedom fighter who wrote against religious extremism in his poems, short stories and novels, died in a Bangalore hospital last weekend. He was 62. Widely known by his pen name, Mannan, Gupta worked for many newspapers since 1960. He was general secretary of Bangladesh’ National Poetry Council.

 

 

 

 

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan


A High court has allowed disgraced nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan, who pioneered Pakistan’s nuclear program, will be allowed to move within the country but asked him not to speak to the media. Khan has been under virtual house arrest since February 2004 after he took responsibility for nuclear proliferation and apologized to the nation. He ran an underground nuclear bazaar and said Pakistan had sent centrifuges to North Korea under the supervision of Musharraf’s agents.
