BANGALORE, India - A major mishap was averted at the Bangalore airport when a Hyderabad-bound Kingfisher Airlines' aircraft hit a stray dog on the runway and aborted take-off after its nose-landing gear collapsed. "The aircraft, which joined the fleet in December 2007, hit a dog on the runway during its take-off roll causing the nose landing gear to collapse. All the passengers were evacuated by the crew," the airlines said.
"It is unfortunate that dog menace still persists at airports in India causing such incidents as on the Bangalore runway,” the airlines said.


 

LWAR, India - 74-year-old Shiv Charan is once again appearing for the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education’s class X exam - for an incredible 39th time. All with the hope of eventually getting married! He is a little hard of hearing and age has slowed him down, but Pappu, as he is known, used the help of a stick to walk 4km from his village in Alwar district, about 140km from the state capital Jaipur, to the examination centre in Maharajawas village. the average age of a student appearing for the examination is 15 years. Charan who took his first board exam way back in 1969 and vowed to get married only after he cleared it. “It’s the mathematics paper that always pulls me down,” said Pappu.

Unlucky 13? Kerala assembly member Simon Britto certainly doesn’t think so.  He put up a fight to be allotted Room No. 13 in the old block of the Legislative Assembly Hostel here and got it too.

Britto, a nominated member from the Anglo-Indian community, had been demanding this for the last nine months pointing out that the hostel had Room Nos. 12, 12 A, 12 B, and also 14 - but no Room No.13. Apparently the number was left out because of superstitious reasons when the building was opened in 1959.

The Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) wants budding star Tanushree Datta blacklisted for making allegations of “indecent behaviour” against veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar.

 

The MNS, which was recently in the news for its violence against north Indians living in Mumbai, has threatened to stage protests against the actress if she did not give an unconditional apology to the actor, whom it describes as the “pride of Maharashtra”.

 

 Datta stomped out of the set referring to the “unbecoming” manner in which Patekar behaved with her.

DHAKA, Bangladesh - Four former Bangladesh MPs who were jailed on corruption charges have been stripped of their privileges for illegally using cell phones. Their entitlements of a small cot, newspapers and other facilities were cancelled for three months after they were found to be using cell phones to contact their families and associates outside the jail, the Daily Star reported.


KERALA, India – Police have sought help from Interpol to nab a woman, earlier living in Britain, who had allegedly feigned death so that her husband could collect insurance.
Sara Williams, earlier called Saramma Thomas, Sara was living in Surrey, England  for over a decade. In 2000, her husband told UK’s Nat West Bank she had died in Kerala and made a 200,000-pound insurance claim. There's a twist in the tale: Sara's husband, who had actually made the false claim, died in 2002.


DHAKA, Bangladesh -  The police in a village in northern Bangladesh have detained a tribal woman for biting a girl and drinking her blood. Tumpi Mij, of the indigenous tribal group, was caught attacking the 10-year-old victim during Easter Sunday celebrations. Father Anthony Sen said local indigenous people had embraced Christianity but many converts still practised witchcraft as part of their tribal culture.


PATNA, India -  A middle-aged Dalit woman was brutally thrashed and her hair cut off for allegedly practising witchcraft in a Bihar village. The woman, Lalpari, in her 40s, is a resident of Naubatpur village near Patna. "She was first tied to a palm tree with a rope, then thrashed and her hair was cut off and burnt in front of a crowd of villagers," a senior police officer said. The incident created an uproar in the state assembly.

 

NEW DELHI, India -  Rinki Kaushik, the 15-year-old girl who slipped into coma on January 7 after she was allegedly hit by a teacher has died. According to her father Naresh Kaushik, the Class 10 student of the privately-run Dinkar National Model School in east Delhi went into coma because her teacher, Dhirendra Kumar Dinkar, assaulted her. The education department de-recognised the school on March 5 for resorting to corporal punishment.

Tibet's architectural landmark, the Potala Palace,reopened to tourists, ten days after it was closed for security reasons following the riots March 14.

 

The palace, built in the seventh century and on the world cultural heritage list, was closed the day after the riots in which 18 civilians and one police officer were killed, said Jampa Gesang, head of the Potala Palace administration office. The Potala Palace received more than one million tourists in 2007, a 56 percent increase year-on-year.

 

LUCKNOW, India - Six women in burqas, all from the same family, tried to set themselves ablaze outside the Uttar Pradesh assembly building he to protest harassment by a bully. Timely arrival of the police prevented them from carrying out their mission.They said they were trying to extreme step to draw the attention of authorities to harassment by a local bully. The women have been arrested and booked for attempting to commit suicide.

 

AGRA, India - Three-year-old Vandana, who fell into a 50-foot deep bore well shaft in a village and was rescued by army soldiers, is recovering well at a hospital here.
Vandana accidentally fell into the bore well in village Tehra in Saiyan block of Khairagarh tehsil on the Agra-Gwalior Road, some 28 km from Agra city.
 Local authorities have launched an inquiry to identify the people who left the bore well shaft uncovered.
