A youth was arrested at the weekend in connection with an armed attack on a Communist Party of India-Marxist office in which six party workers were injured, two critically. The arrested youth, K. Ubais, 25, is said to be an activist of the National Democratic Front, a militant Muslim outfit. The youth was part of a group of about a dozen people armed with swords that came in vehicles and attacked the CPI-M activists who were watching television in the party's branch committee office at the time.
KOLKATA, India
A seven-year-old boy was allegedly stripped and severely beaten up by people for stealing a bicycle in Behrampore in West Bengal. The boy, Kailash Raut, was tied to a tree and tortured for more than 40 minutes until the police rushed in and rescued him, said Dilip Bandopadhyay, inspector in-charge of Behrampore, headquarters of Murshidabad district. The incident occurred just metres away from the district magistrate's bungalow. The boy received some deep gashes on his hands and legs and has been sent for medical tests.

Angry villagers blockaded a road to protest the police failure to arrest a man who poured acid on a teenaged girl. Over 300 people of Hatina village in Kendrapada district demanded the arrest of Udaya Pradhan, 35, who allegedly threw acid on Indira Rout, 18, at the weekend after she spurned his marriage proposals. Pradhan, who has two grown up sons, escaped after the incident. The girl sustained 60 percent burns on her face, chest and back. She is now in hospital.

Unable to come to terms with their mother's death, a brother and a sister in their teens killed themselves by jumping in front of a speeding train in West Bengal, police said Saturday. The mutilated bodies of Smriti Kakkar, 18, and Mohit, 16, were found in Burdwan, 90 km from Kolkata. Smriti was a first year college student and Mohit was a Grade 10 student. A suicide note was found in Mohit's pocket. Distraught father Ashwini Kumar Kakkar, 52, a bus owner, said his wife Niru, 40, had suffered a cerebral stroke a week ago and died Wednesday.?

A month after the mysterious murder of a girl in a hostel in Vijayawada, the Andhra Pradesh Human Rights Commission began the public hearing into the case, which has evoked a public outcry. Officials visited Durga ladies hostel in Ibrahimpatnam area, where 19-year-old Ayesha, a first year student studying pharmacy, was raped and murdered Dec 27. Iqbal Basha and his wife Begum alleged that the Vijayawada police were deliberately going slow on the probe as the culprits were backed by some "big politicians" of the ruling Congress party. A letter was found near the body, stating that the girl was raped and murdered for refusing the murderer's request for "love."

A man who allegedly kidnapped over two dozen children and sexually abused them has been arrested in Bihar's Sitamarhi district. Arjun Sah, in his 30s, was taken into custody this week for abducting a child in Sitamarhi. He shocked police officials by revealing that he had kidnapped children to sexually abuse them and not for ransom. Sah and his gang were reportedly involved in over two dozen abductions in Bihar and in neighbouring Uttar Pradesh and Nepal.
WARDHA, India
A fast track court in Maharashtra has offered a man accused of rape the option of marrying his victim and accepting the child borne out of his crime in lieu of five years of imprisonment. Rahul Nimsadkar of village Kapsi had a relationship with a minor and had promised to marry her. However, he went back on his word after she became pregnant. The victim's family filed a rape case against Nimsadkar. Mimsadkar said he would take his chances with an appeal. The victim had delivered a child and attained majority during the court case.
HYDERABAD, India
Denial of cooking gas is believed to have driven a Central Reserve Police Force constable to kill a senior official at the paramilitary force's group centre. The constable shot dead Additional Deputy Inspector General Syed Sirajuddin Khan and also attempted to kill a deputy commandant before being overpowered by other officers at Chandrayangutta in the Old City. CRPF sources said the constable used to complain that he was being denied a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connection. He had met the two officers several times seeking a gas connection. ?
