Hepburn dress gets fortune


Legendary actress Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress from “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” set a new world record when it was sold for a dazzling US$924,588 (C$1,064,000), including the buyer’s premium, at auction house Christie’s. The dress, an iconic piece of cinematic history, was designed by Hubert de Givenchy, who became Hepburn’s lifelong friend back in 1953.

 

Deep Purple in India

 

Veteran English rockers Deep Purple will travel halfway around the world this month to play a one-night stand in India. The band, which broke through in the early 1970s with hits like “Smoke on the Water” and “Hush,” will fly in from South America to play the Bangalore Palace Grounds on Dec. 17. before continuing their tour in Europe. Bangalore was the only Asian stop on a world tour in support of the group’s new album “Rapture of the Deep.”

 

Voter list overhaul

 

The Bangladesh Election Commission has begun to overhaul the list of voters, which an election watchdog says contains millions of erroneous names, before January’s parliamentary elections. A sample survey of voters found that the current list had more than 12 million names entered in error or due to the cause of repetition.

 

Demon dilemma

 

Pakistani police have arrested a man accused of murdering his 22-year-old daughter because he said she was possessed by demons. According to police, the father said his daughter’s possession had stemmed from the time of her recent engagement. Every year hundreds of women are killed in Pakistan in these disputes.

 

Super drug planned

 

Ananda M. Chakrabarty, an Indian American scientist, has held out a hope of a multi-targeted drug that could help simultaneously treat several diseases including cancer, HIV/AIDS and malaria. “We have just applied to the US Food and Drug Administration and are studying how to move forward,” Chakrabarty states.
