Nations tournament set for July 18-20


The Nations Cup Soccer Society presents the 29th Annual Nations Cup Soccer Tournament the weekend of July 18-20. The tournament is being held at Hugh Boyd Complex, No. 1 Road and Francis Road, Richmond, B.C., from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday night and from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.


The Nations Cup is recognized by players and spectators alike as one of the foremost amateur men’s and women’s soccer tournaments in Western Canada. This unique concept brings together players of different ethnic background, or countries of different origin, which creating a World Cup atmosphere that provides a platform for people throughout the community to represent their ethnic pride.


Teams representing Argentina, the Caribbean, Canada, China, England, India, Germany, Scotland, and the defending champions Italy, to name a few, have helped attract an average of more than 6,000 attendees over the course of the weekend.


For the past 28 years, The Nations Cup has showcased some of the province’s finest soccer talent, such as Canadian National Team players Randy Samuel, David Norman, and John Catliffe, and last year’s MVP David Xuasa. There are 48 teams involved in the tournament this year, with four age groups and eight women’s teams.
