Khac Chi and Ngoc Bich Hoang

The Khac Chi — Sounds of Vietnam features two of Vietnam’s premiere musicians, performing exquisite music on rare and unique instruments native to Vietnam.

These virtuoso artists offer an intriguing glimpse into the rich musical tradition of Vietnam and its 4000-year history.

Famous for their musical skills innovation throughout Vietnam, Khac Chi takes you on an adventure in sound.  Extremely versatile, their concerts may include a combination of styles or feature any one style of Vietnamese traditional music, Vietnamese folk music or contemporary music to world music.

They are as equally comfortable performing solo chamber concerts, as they are on folk festival stages, or as guest soloists for symphony orchestras. Their rare talents and superb musicianship have won them numerous awards for excellence, as well as many invitations for international appearances.

Chi Khac Ho is the world’s premiere virtuoso on the Dan Bau (one string zither) as well as a composer and a music researcher. Chi’s innovative developments on the dan bau have been heard in concerts throughout North America, Europe and Asia.

Chi attended the National School of Music, studying Dan Bau and traditional music theory with many of Vietnam’s top performers and instructors. His education included the music of China, Korea, Indian and Europe, as well as a number of years of field studies in rural Vietnam. Arriving in Vancouver in 1992, Chi has teached Vietnamese instruments at the University of British Columbia, and continues to perform internationally with his ensemble.

Ngoc Bich Hoang is an exceptional vocalist, arranger and multi-instrumentalist. She specializes on the dan bau and a number of very rare instruments from Vietnam’s rural and mountainous regions including the t’rung (bamboo xylophone), k’longput (percussion tubles), and ko ni. Bich has toured internationally both as a solo artist and with the Khac Chi Ensemble.

Since moving to Canada in 1992, Bich has taught Vietnamese music and various instruments at UBC.  She has been expanding her musical repertoire by performing with a number of world music and new music artists, and performs works by Canadian contemporary composers.

Khac Chi will be among the top Asian performing artists at the 2008 Family Festival featuring the exciting musical collaboration of a show entitled, “Music for a New World” which will be held April 20th at 2 pm at the Vancouver Centennial Theatre.
