Our future fashion designers hit the ground running at the 22nd annual Vancouver Fashion Week (VFW). They showcased clean lines, modern colours and chic patterns.

Here are five of the notable new designers who made waves at the recent Fall show.

1. Angela Huang

 

Born in Taiwan and raised in Canada, Huang’s dresses and suits are pure, elegant and angelic. An avid traveler, Huang carries a sketch book wherever she goes. Huang is able to transform the runway with jaw-dropping asymmetrical pieces that are characterized by high fashion standards and embellished with a Chanel-esque semblance. Her entire collection is white, notably to enhance Huang’s clean attention to detail.

 

2. Giovanna Ricci

 

Giovanna Ricci’s Italian-inspired 2014 spring—summer collection stole the show at VFW. Her pieces were reminiscent of Roberto Cavalli and her talent showed itself to be in line with the heavyweights of the fashion world. Her collection at VFW was comprised of mainly black sheer, mesh and viscose pieces with a classic modern twist. Two white ensembles complemented her trademark black shade on the runway, making it the perfect balance. Unlike most of the other designer’s models who typically return to the runway one behind the other after the show, Ricci’s models stand in pyramid form and in unison stomp their way simultaneously down the runway. Joanne Ricci is the designer behind Giovanna’s creations.

 

3. No Label Society

 

Andrew Kessler’s Restless Soul Collective was one of the most captivating shows at VFW. Kessler’s inspiration is drawn from nomadic cultures – his designs are clearly fan favourites for their originality. You can tell from this collection the designer hails from Los Angeles. The clothing carries an LA swag to it, with an appeal for anybody who enjoys living outside the norm. His collection should also be noted for its play on durability and functionalism. Whoever sports No Label Society certainly doesn’t abide by any fashion guidelines except to express their individualism and bold choice for both function and fashion.

 

4. Nina Tan

 

Stephanie Hung is the designer the Nina Tan collection. One of the inspirations for the colours in her collection is the transparency and shimmer of rainbows. Featuring her 2014 spring–summer collection for the first time at VFW, the audience enjoyed her variety of offerings. Hung’s traditional Chinese parents influenced her designs, as she describes her collection as “feminine, classic and sophisticated.”

 

5. Indiverve

 

The designers behind Indiverve are driven to create a brand that practices fair trade and strives to be conscious about the impact they have on the environment. Indiverve’s clothing is not only artistic but also functional. With an Indian influence, their unique designs are an eclectic mix of florals and patterns, with few solid block colours. You can appreciate what Indiverve strives to deliver—clothing that is refined and reflects elements of Indian artisans with beads and weaving.
