Fishing lessons a hit with kids and teens

If you think kids today are only interested in video games, Facebook and TV, this may surprise you: “Learn to Fish” sessions are a huge hit with 5 to 15 year olds.
In these hands-on two-hour outdoor classes, kids learn about fish, fishing and local ecosystems.
Gear is provided, so all participants need is a hat and sunscreen.
“Most classes are already full”, says program coordinator Tanya Laird, “but there’s still space available at Rice Lake in North Vancouver and at provincial park campgrounds.”
“No need to pre-register – just be there 10 to 15 minutes before the start of each session. Parent supervision is required – but we find the parents have as much fun as the kids.”
More than 100,000 people have taken part in the program since its launch in 2006 – proof that fishing is as popular as ever in BC. The program is delivered by the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, with financial aid from the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation, Columbia Basin Trust and the Province of British Columbia.
Learn to Fish sessions take place at Rice Lake every Sunday till August 18, from 10 a.m. to noon.
