Surrey's Tynehead Hatchery "Salmon Send Off"

Raj Hundal was nominated as the NDP Candidate for Surrey-Tynehead in July 2011. He is a graduate of UBC and the University of Manchester’s School of Law with a life-long involvement in politics. Formerly a political aide to well respected Member of Parliament for Surrey-North Penny Priddy and was elected as a Vancouver Park Board Commissioner in 2008. Raj worked with the Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society, where he provided immigrant support services, acting as a liaison between Surrey’s cultural communities.

Surrey's Tynehead Hatchery's 'Salmon Send off' event brought together community members and environmental supporters to support salmon steward volunteers in the region. The community has been invited for several years to help release salmon fry into the River and experience trout fishing in the hatchery's holding ponds.

Live entertainment and activities hosted by local volunteer organizations surrounded the event. In particular, all of Surrey's salmon-themed volunteer organizations were invited to celebrate their endeavours by participating at the event with information booths about the stewardship works their group conducts and to encourage community members to join in volunteer activities.

Increasing community awareness and appreciation of the importance of protecting the watershed that they reside within is an important goal of all the local salmon stewardship groups involved, and it begins with a simple action such as taking part in a salmon fry release or pledging support to a local volunteer organization that makes everyone's efforts realized.

I look forward to taking part in next year's salmon fry release and encourage others to join me!
