June 12th 2012 will mark the anniversary of the Independence of Philippines. It is certainly a joyous occasion for all of us to celebrate and remember. In recognition of this special day, the Surrey Philippines Independence Day Society (SPIDS) organized a great event at the Chandos Pattison Auditorium.
As we celebrate, it is important to remember that the independence of Philippines was achieved only after years of collective struggle, where people fought tirelessly for social justice, freedom and a sovereign nation. We must not forget that many people sacrificed everything including their lives to ensure others could exist free of oppression.
We are blessed in this multicultural nation, especially in Surrey, with such strong links to Philippines. The Filipino community in British Columbia and more particularly in Surrey has enriched our social fabric and strengthens our diverse Canadian identity. In Surrey-Tynehead, Filipinos of all ages continue to make a tremendous and positive impact in the community, whether they be elders sharing their experience and wisdom or the volunteer spirit provided by youth.
It is because I believe that celebrating Philippines Independence Day preserves a significant and vitally important cultural link to the past, for both present and future generations, that I wish everyone peace and prosperity on this anniversary of Philippines Independence Day.
Warmest regards,
Raj Hundal Surrey-Tynehead NDP Candidate
