Responsibility

An immigrant South Asian woman's insights, wisdom and opinions on every aspect of life.

As I sit here writing my very first blog, I simultaneously wonder what have I got myself into as well as thinking "wow".

What am I going to talk about?

I feel I have a lot to say even though some who read my column may not agree. But they still read it! I ruffle feathers as I get to the heart of the matter. I don't mince words even though I'm mindful of not hurting feelings.

Let's talk about comments popular radio talk show host Harjinder Thind made on his show the day after another South Asian woman was brutally killed, allegedly by her husband.

His comments got the ladies at Surrey Women's Centre up in arms and they responded by filing a complaint with CRTC, to which I say "Hallelujah". One of the comments from Thind was, "Recently women have taken many leaps forward to gain freedom with the help of men. Is this freedom becoming the reason behind domestic violence?"

Here is a South Asian man in a unique and powerful position where he can help this community's men to see that domestic violence is not acceptable, instead, he is inciting the men. I have listened to his show a couple of times and couldn’t believe the absurdness I heard flowing out of the speakers. This time he is being called on his comments. Thank you to the ladies at Surrey Women's Centre.

I didn't want to talk about domestic violence, especially in my very first blog. But I feel the significance of the complaint to CRTC on Thind's comments were worth talking about here. Thind is in position where he can influence thoughts, especially of his mostly male listeners. To use that platform to further encourage the very thinking that is behind domestic violence is not okay.

Let's hope the CRTC complaint encourages responsible journalism in the future.
