SFU Surrey eyes bigger, brighter future
Wed, February 15 2006
Elvira Hall is pleased that her two eldest children are doing well in their chosen programs at the Simon Fraser University.
“It’s a good university,” Hall said. “SFU offers good programs to choose from.”
The
mother of four who works as a real estate agent also noted that
students are likewise given the opportunity to work while studying in
order for them to gain valuable experience.
The Halls are
among the thousands of families that form part of the growing community
of SFU Surrey, the only public university in the South Fraser Valley.
“We’re looking at
the year 2010 when our students would number at least 5,000. Right now
we have about 1,000,” said N. John McKendry, program director for
community outreach and engagement for SFU Surrey.
McKendry beamed
with pride as he pointed out that students themselves were manning the
over 30 exhibition stalls put up during the open house.
“We want young
people to talk to young people, some of whom came along with their
parents to have an early look at our campus,” he said.
In one exhibition
area, delighted visitors watched as computing science students let
loose robot dogs in a game of mini-soccer, a demonstration of the
cutting edge projects they do in class.
Located in one of
the Canada’s largest and fastest growing cities, the campus is an
impressive five-storey podium, three-storey sky-lit galleria and a
20-storey tower sitting adjacent to the sky train station and bus loop
at Surrey’s Central City.
Virginia
Hasselfield, who raises funds for the campus, noted that SFU Surrey is
the only institution with a full university presence in the South
Fraser region.
“Our vision is to make a big difference in the community,” Hasselfield said. More info: www.surrey.sfu.ca
