Thu, July 21 2005
The popularity of kurta's worn by Bollywood hunk Shah Rukh Khan and starlet Preity Zinta's sharara's and other traditional outfits has increased among non-resident Indians (NRIs') and people of foreign origin, said Sanjay Mehta, director, Homeindia.com. "We get at least 20 orders a month from different countries-mainly from Canada, the UK and US. "We have a vast selection of outfits on our website that the stars had worn in their movies. As per the order, we recreate and customise these outfits for our customers. The company's annual turnover has reached 20 million rupees (about C$500,000). As of now, we've only been selling to overseas customers," says Mehta. So how does it sell Homeindia.com displays a variety of outfits worn by Indian stars. Customers log on to the site and choose a design that they like, and provide specifications about their size and fittings. Within two-three weeks of the order, these outfits are created and shipped to the customers. The payment is made online.
Sometimes customers also suggest particular designs that they like in Hindi movies. One customer demanded a kurta Rishi Kapoor had worn in the movie Laila Majnu in the 70's. It was difficult for us to find the movie and the exact outfit, but we eventually managed and executed the order," says Mehta. According to Mehta, Shah Rukh Khan, Preity Zinta and Rani Mukherji are the hottest stars abroad.
