The "Saturn Project" was announced by General Motors chairman Roger
 
Smith and President Jim McDonald in November of 1983. From this start, Saturn's goal has been to bring new business to General Motors by attracting car buyers away from small cars produced by foreign companies and non-GM domestics automakers.

 

To successfully compete in this highly competitive market segment, GM sought more then just another car model. Instead, a new, autonomous subsidiary was launched in January of 1985, Saturn Corporation.

 

In addition Popular Mechanics magazine gives Saturn the "Design and Engineering" award for "manufacturing processes that result in exceptionally high quality for an all-new vehicle."

 

Since this launch, Saturn has pioneered new directions in virtually every aspect of automotive design, manufacturing and marketing; including a historic partnership agreement with the United Automobile Workers, and the development of its unique Retailer network.

 

These new directions and other Saturn activities are more then business "tactics"; they are actions that have resulted from Saturn Corporation's adherence to a system of values focused on fulfilling its corporate mission.
