Re: BC gifts of learning for Filipino Kids
Enspire should be commended for this gift to the less fortunate children. It is a noble cause to help other people. They could help further if they would look at the other sources of poverty and unemployment in the Philippines.
As usual the real issue is obscured much more so in a country which is predominantly Catholic and where the church does not allow contraceptives and birth control. Atienza, the mayor of Manila, to curry favor from the Catholic church hierarchy, banned birth control items like condoms, contraceptive creams, birth conrtrol pills, from "his city". Government bureaucrats are mostly graduates of exclusive Catholic schools, like Ateneo, LaSalle, San Beda, Notre Dame, etc. They hold the view that a robust population is a good source of labor, so why recommend the use of birth control to the masses? Families who can not afford the financial burdens of having children should practice birth control and put off having children until they can afford to clothe and fed them. It is a vicious cycle that produces more poor and less fortunate children. The population of the republic is rising geometrically. Its biggest foreign currency earners are the OFW or Overseas Foreign Workers. There are simply no jobs that pays as much at home, so the mothers go to work abroad and leave more unattended children to fend for themselves, which create new problems. By Alfonso DeMayo

Here is an example of how a Muslim from the Orient define "indecency". It is indecent for Nadine to enter a beauty pageant by displaying her body in a swimsuit.
A Westerner will find it indecent to have four wives wrapped in burka and veils, to be impregnated like rabbits to make Indonesia the most populous Muslim nation in the world. Yes, this is Canada and we all cherish our freedoms. Can we do this is Indonesia? I doubt it. Alfonso DeMayo

Philippines is a very dangerous place to be a journalist. There are many corrupt government officials, police and armed forces personnel included.
If a newsperson exposes a corrupt government official in the Philippines nowadays it is considered a form of suicide. The reasons are multiple : first, the death penalty has been abolished by Arroyo. Second, firearms are easy to acquire. Bullets are cheap. Third, there are always disgraced and unemployed ex-police, ex-army personnel willing to hire themselves out as killers. Then there are the professional criminals. The politicians usually have police or army security plus his own private bodyguards. These "security" people can be persuaded to silence a vocal critic of the politician for a few thousand pesos. That is why there is no compelling reason for the PNP or the Phil National Police to catch the criminals who murder the media persons. Maybe if there is a reward that criminal can be arrested. That is a long way from being convicted and incarcerated in jail. There is no more death penalty, so the criminal will serve his sentence until he gets paroled and released. If the victim has a big family, they will extract their own justice by avenging that death. If the family of the victim is well-to-do, they will hire/pay some one, an ex-police or ex-army personnel or even a serving policeman or army prsonnel, to avenge the death of that family member. This is called a "rido", or feud a-la Capulet/Montague without the young lovers. There have been reports that some media persons blackmail or shake down corrupt politicians and government officials. There have been no proof to this allegations so far. There are reports that media persons can be paid off to forgo an expose of a corrupt official. As long as the killings does not lead to the Palace, Arroyo couldn't care less. She has created another body to look into the media killings. As president of the republic she could order the police to solve the murder cases. Right now Arroyo is like a rodeo rider on a very bucky bull hanging on for dear life and have to make nice to the army and the police, unmindful of the dead media persons. My mother is in ICU in the hospital. She keeps talking about a miracle doctor. I tried on the internet and found this article. She is too poor to go see Dr. Huang. She has stong hope that someone or something will save her. My last wish for her would be to have Dr. Huang come see her and give her that hope.
