The truth behind the lies
Wed, December 03 2008
Khouri is a thief, a saint, a seductress and a sociopath – depending on who is talking. Men want to marry her, Islamic extremists want to kill her and the global publishing industry wishes she would just disappear. Khouri won fame and fortune with her “true story” Forbidden Love. The book was a runaway bestseller, translated into multiple languages, and Khouri became the toast of the literary world, until July 2004 when journalist Malcolm Knox of the Sydney Morning Herald published an article revealing Khouri’s story was invented. She’s been in hiding ever since. Now she wants to talk. Weaving between the literary salons of London, the mosque-lined vistas of Jordan, the beachside suburbs of Queensland and the seamy Chicago backstreets of Norma’s dubious past, the documentary Forbidden Lie$ pits Khouri’s tale against the stories of those who believe she duped them: the publishers, the FBI, her next door neighbour . . .even her husband. Anna Broinowski secured Khouri’s full participation in this entertaining film. She digs into Khouri’s history, cajoles her on camera to reveal the “truth” and is constantly sent on wild goose chases by her subject in this 107-minute film. Forbidden Lie$ will be playing on Dec. 5, 8, 9: Friday 7 p.m., Monday, 9:15 p.m., Tuesday, 7 p.m. What: Showing of Forbidden Lie$
