Surrey youth will unleash the truth with various art forms
Wed, November 26 2008
graffiti The Surrey Urban Youth Project is a free arts-based, youth-driven, empowerment program. Since 2006, SUYP has filled a crucial gap in youth programming within Surrey.
SUYP presents The Truth Unleashed, in collaboration with Kla-how-eya youth and with the support of Pacific Community Resources Society on Nov. 28. This is a free evening of art, performance and community dialogue.
The art of these youth speaks honestly and daringly for changes that need to take place in Surrey. Art forms will include spoken word, graffiti, film, visual arts and more. The evening will also feature an interactive dialogue addressing poverty in Surrey using Theatre of the Oppressed.
The intention of this project is to build community connections to strengthen the voice of young people in Surrey. Since 2006, SUYP has provided anti-oppression, life skills and community organizing training for Indigenous, immigrant, refugee, and “at-risk” youth aged 14 to 18. Their unique approach involves youth engagement centres utilizing creative expression and urban arts as the tools to explore social issues and personal experiences affecting the lives of young people in Surrey.
Trainings in facilitation, conflict resolution and anti-oppression supports participants in developing skills that help them to lead whole and healthy lives and become active leaders.
The Truth Unleashed will take place at the Kla-how-eya Aboriginal Centre, 13629 108th Ave., Surrey, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
