Raising awareness has never tasted so good
Wed, November 12 2008
hotdog copy The Association of South Asian Professionals of British Columbia (ASAP), working with Friendship Providers in Action, will be conducting a Hotdog Day for the Homeless on Sunday, Nov. 16, beginning at 1 p.m. at Oppenheimer Park in East Vancouver.
ASAP will be serving up hotdogs and other refreshments to the less fortunate. The group of South Asian professionals will also distribute gently used clothing.
By raising awareness, ASAP hopes others will join in to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the approximately 2,300 homeless people in Vancouver.
“The issue of homelessness should be a major concern for everyone in British Columbia,” said Jindy Bhalla, president of ASAP. “There are several reports suggesting that the number of people that will be homeless could triple in the Lower Mainland in the next few years. This problem needs to be addressed now before it gets any worse.
“ASAP and its members are doing their part by getting involved with our second Hotdog Day for the Homeless, and giving back to the community. We encourage and challenge others to join us to help resolve the plight of the homeless.”
ASAP has been a part of several events during its short existence. Last March, the first ASAP Hotdog Day for the Homeless event fed 1,000 homeless people.
The recently formed group consists of South Asian professionals from a variety of disciplines including lawyers, engineers, doctors, media and local business people.
The vision of the association is to exhibit social responsibility through positive action in the community.
