The exquisite Orchid Ensemble—Lan Tung (erhu),
Gelina Jiang (zheng) and Jonathan Bernard
(marimba)—blends ancient musical instruments and
traditions to produce a creative and distinct new sound.
This performance is part of the Daniel Pearl World Music
Days, an annual global concert affi rming the ideals of
tolerance, friendship and our shared humanity.

Summer Afternoon (1956) follows two boys as they
explore Chinatown and inner False Creek. Directed by
Ron Kelly.
Mary Lee Chan: Taking on City Hall (2006) tells the
story of the legendary Strathcona resident who, with
her neighbours, stood up and saved their homes and
neighbourhood. Directed by Susan Poizner.
Tailor Made: Chinatown’s Last Tailors (2008) is a hearttouching
Canadian story about legacy as Bill and Jack
Wong, of Modernize Tailors, face retirement. Directed by
Leonard Lee and Marsha Newbery. Free

VANCOUVER JAPANESE LANGUAGE SCHOOL &
JAPANESE HALL FOOD BAZAAR

Come early to this semi-annual Japanese feast and eat,
eat, eat! As a special festival treat, the Dovbush Dancers
from the Ukrainian Hall in Strathcona will perform lively

THE CHINESE LAUNDRY BOY WALKING TOUR
with Elwin Xie (Yuen)
Sunday November 2, 11:30am (approx. 2 hours)
Meet at SE corner of Union & Main Streets
Join Elwin Xie (Yuen) on a tour of the Chinatown of his
boyhood. Elwin’s roots run deep in the history of the
neighbourhood: his family owned and operated the
Union Laundry during the 1940’s until the 1970’s. The
tour will end at the Chinese Benevolent Association for a
short video on Chinese laundries and refreshments. $10
for non-residents, pay what you can for local residents

Barvinok Choir, AUUC Folk Orchestra, Dovbush Dancers
