Pender The exquisite Orchid Ensemble—Lan Tung (erhu), Gelina Jiang (zheng) and Jonathan Bernard (marimba)—blends ancient musical instruments and traditions to produce a creative and distinct new sound. Saturday November 1, 6pm – 8pm Carnegie Theatre, 401 Main Summer Afternoon (1956) follows two boys as they explore Chinatown and inner False Creek. Directed by Ron Kelly. Mary Lee Chan: Taking on City Hall (2006) tells the story of the legendary Strathcona resident who, with her neighbours, stood up and saved their homes and neighbourhood. Directed by Susan Poizner. Tailor Made: Chinatown’s Last Tailors (2008) is a hearttouching Canadian story about legacy as Bill and Jack Wong, of Modernize Tailors, face retirement. Directed by Leonard Lee and Marsha Newbery. Free THE CHINESE LAUNDRY BOY WALKING TOUR with Elwin Xie (Yuen) Sunday November 2, 11:30am (approx. 2 hours) Meet at SE corner of Union & Main Streets Join Elwin Xie (Yuen) on a tour of the Chinatown of his boyhood. Elwin’s roots run deep in the history of the neighbourhood: his family owned and operated the Union Laundry during the 1940’s until the 1970’s. The tour will end at the Chinese Benevolent Association for a short video on Chinese laundries and refreshments. $10 for non-residents, pay what you can for local residents CHINESE CANADIAN HISTORICAL SOCIETY WRITERS Sunday November 2, 1:30pm – 2:30pm Chinese Benevolent Association of Vancouver 108 E.
