South Asians will Light up the Night
Wed, October 08 2008
diwali copy Diwali or Deepavali, the “Festival of Light,” is a joyous occasion that is celebrated by many South Asians including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Christians. It signifies a time of new beginnings, the victory of good over evil and cultural harmony.
The South Asian Family Association (SAFA) will be commemorating this special occasion with its Annual Diwali Gala “Light Up the Night” on Friday Oct. 17 at Fraserview Hall in Vancouver.
This fundraising gala will benefit the SAFA Youth Scholarship program and a future SAFA Family Resource Centre. The SAFA Youth Scholarship program was created to encourage South Asian students to become locally engaged in their communities by volunteering time and energy, and to reward academic excellence. The scholarships are awarded at SAFA’s flagship festival, Sawan Mela, each summer.
This year, SAFA, with the help of community sponsors, awarded scholarships to three young women pursuing higher education: Pavandeep Gill, Sonia Kalia and Sukhmanpreet Sidhu.
SAFA has a long term vision to establish a youth centre, to bring South Asian arts, community and role models to our youth in a progressive and safe environment. The group’s goal is to empower youth and provide a venue for them to come together to socialize, celebrate, and embrace their South Asian heritage.
SAFA invites you to enjoy the festival of Diwali with your family and friends while raising funds to support South Asian Youth. Included in the ticket price are dinner, dancing to the music of DJ AfterShock, special guests, cultural performances including bhangra by the Punjab Cultural Arts Centre, Giddha, live music, fire-dancing, and more. There will be a 50/50 draw as well as a free children’s’ area.
Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for students, or a table for $200. Call Suki at 778.688.3996 to reserve your table today.
