Katari Taiko, the first Taiko group formed in Canada, presents an afternoon concert featuring guest performers Kunaka, a dynamic youth marimba ensemble playing music from the Shona tradition of Zimbabwe, and United Bhangra, one of B.C.’s most entertaining South Asian groups, specializing in Bhangra dance and music.
The concert, at the Roundhouse Performance Centre on Nov. 9 at 2 p.m., brings together three of Vancouver’s most lively and talented community-based percussionists to share their cultures.
Katari Taiko, formed in 1979, is an Asian-Canadian performing company that has performed throughout Canada and the United States. Taiko music is rooted in the history of rural farming and fishing communities throughout Japan. Katari Taiko combines the traditional rhythms and discipline of the drums with the power of choreographed and improvisational movement. The synergy of the group, their joy and passion, together with the visceral experience of the drumming appeals to audiences of all ages and transcends cultural barriers.
Kunaka has been performing the joyful marimba music of Zimbabwe at community events and celebrations from Britannia to Bowen, including the Vancouver Folk Fest. Based at Britannia Community Centre in East Vancouver, Kunaka appeals to audiences of all ages and musical persuasions. This group of youth ages 12 -15 play with confidence and enthusiasm, sharing their enjoyment of the Shona melodies taught by mbira master Kurai Mubaiwa.
United Bhangra was formed by friends in 2005 to promote Bhangra and provide a positive role model in the community. United has captured audiences all over North America with their energy and music.
