India struggles with gay rights
Thu, September 25 2008
gay copy The Indian government has sought more time from the Delhi High Court to sort out differences between its home and health ministries over de-criminalization of homosexuality among adults.
Additional Solicitors General P.P. Malhotra, told the court that the matter is under consideration and the cabinet would soon make a decision on the issue in view of the differences among the ministries.
The government had taken a contradictory stand with the home ministry favouring upholding the penal provision for homosexual acts while the health ministry was against enforcing the unnatural offences act in cases involving consenting adults.
