Event makes India, BC major anniversaries
Wed, July 23 2008
The event celebrates the 61st anniversary of India’s Independence. India gained independence on Aug. 15, 1947, allowing it to chart its own journey as a free and sovereign nation in the world, and to contribute from its rich traditions and cultural heritage. India Day will also pay tribute to the countless number of martyrs who scarified their lives in the freedom struggle. This year also marks the 150th anniversary of B.C. - 150 years of cultural diversity, community strength and widespread achievement since the founding of the Crown Colony in 1858. There are many things to celebrate, from the contributions of Aboriginal peoples, to the stories of the pioneers who followed the gold rush and set down roots here. This is a time to honour the diversity and achievements of the people who built this province, while also setting our sights on the opportunities that the future holds. The celebration will include a flag-raising by the High Commissioner/Consul General of India, the national anthems of Canada and India, a parade of ex-servicemen and other participants, performances by different groups of India and Canada, patriotic songs and cultural programs.
