Spotlight On: Nina Perez
Thu, July 03 2008
Nina Perez, Director of Baila Vancouver Dance School Talent: Full-time Salsa/Tango instructor, performer, and choreographer in Vancouver’s exciting and growing dance community. Known for her style and grace on the dance floor, Perez’s background and training in both Argentine Tango and Salsa have established her reputation as a dynamic, professional and engaging instructor and dancer. Inspiration: "The happiness in peoples’ eyes, the smiles and laughter of my students are huge inspirations. When they are learning and achieving great results with something completely new and fun, it really inspires me to keep offering new classes and new ways to showcase the world of dance. My family, friends, and boyfriend are great sources of inspiration. Oprah says, ‘Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher,’ and she is right." Cultural Background: "I was born in Argentina, but learned all the Latin dances I teach in Vancouver. Travelling back and forth from my country and different hot dance spots has definitely helped me perfect my techniques. It allows me to bring back more styles and depth to my dancing, although I am always fighting the stereotype that ‘It’s in my blood.’ I believe dancing and the joys of it are universal — everyone has it in their blood though they may need some help to bring it out." Future Plans: "I intend to keep my dance school growing so that we inspire more people to learn and invest in themselves. I also will be working on a dance DVD series, a dance shoe line and a new dance wear line in the near future." Both can be purchased off her website. Awards: 2006 Vice Champions of the Vancouver International Salsa Competition. Advice: "Surround yourself with people that are smarter than you, uplift you and believe in you. They will give you valuable advice and insight. Find a passion that adds value to everyone’s life, including your own." Reality Dance Shows: "I am a huge fan of So You think You Can Dance. I think that it is a brilliant show. I also really enjoy Dancing With the Stars because I love to watch people learning how to dance." Dream Dance Partner: "I heard that Sean Connery is an amazing dancer as well as Richard Gere. I definitely would not say no to either of them!"
