The City of Surrey and Coast Capital Savings are proud to present Surrey’s WinterFest 2008 marking the beginning of Spirit of B.C. Week across the province and the two-year countdown to the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“This year’s first annual Winterfest promises to be full of great activities and entertainment for our entire city to enjoy,” said Mayor Dianne Watts. “The festival will feature some of B.C.’s hottest bands on the mainstage.”
Among those performing is Delhi 2 Dublin. A five member crew taking listeners on a wild and borderless trip through global sounds and synchronicities.
The band fuses the traditional sounds of tabla, dhol, fiddle, and sitar with cutting edge DJ aesthetics, to create a highly charged multi-cultural dance celebration.
Originally formed for a one-shot performance during Vancouver’s Celtic Fest in March of 2006, word of their foot stomping, high energy live set started to spread, and the project soon took on a life of its own.
Recently, D2D were invited to open the massive Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill in Ottawa where they collaborated with Irish and Indian dancers and the National Circus School. They have since played many of the West Coast Canadian festivals and are poised to take their act to a global level. With the able help of global fusion pioneer Adamh Shakh, they’ve just finished production of their first full-length CD. It’s getting steady airplay nationwide on the CBC and RJ1200 and has been played recently on BBC’s Bobby Friction and Nihal and on Pathaan’s Musical Rickshaw.
The festival will take place Saturday, February 9 at Central City Plaza, located at 102 Avenue and 135 Street. Gates open at 12:00 noon with the fire show slated for 6 pm and the concert finale at 10 pm. The entire festival is free for the public.
“WinterFest promises to be one of Surrey’s signature events, one that is eagerly anticipated by Surrey residents of all ages,” said Councillor Linda Hepner, Chair of the Mayor’s 2010 Olympic Task Force.
“As we continue to draw closer to the 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Games, events like WinterFest will allow us to catch the Olympic Spirit and showcase Surrey in anticipation of 2010.”
