The Abbotsford Community Foundation has made an investment into the health and well being of residents with a $100,000 donation to the Discovery Trail Project, the largest donation in the foundation’s history. Mayor George F. Ferguson said that the city appreciative this generous donation from the Abbotsford Community Foundation. For their $100,000 donation, the Abbotsford Community Foundation will receive recognition through five entrance kiosks at the five trail entrance sections, five benches at the five trail sections, varying signage on granite rocks, concrete pavers and interpretive signage at the five locations, as well as other ways legacies will be remembered. The City of North Vancouver Lower Lonsdale Legacy Fund is an endowment fund intended to provide grants for community development projects, programs or services that contribute to the quality of life for residents in Lower Lonsdale. Priority will be given to those proposals which support or implement the recommended strategies of the Lower Lonsdale Social Development Strategy which was submitted to City Council in July 2005. Funding can be applied to new or existing projects, programs or services.
Lower Lonsdale is defined geographically as that area bounded by Burrard Inlet to the south, Forbes Avenue to the west, East Eighth Street to the north and St. David's Avenue to the west. Applications can be made from organizations or groups which are not located in Lower Lonsdale but which serve Lower Lonsdale residents.

The City of Surrey and Coast Capital Savings are proud to present Surrey’s WinterFest 2008. This celebration marks the beginning of Spirit of BC Week across the province and the two-year countdown to the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games. Mayor Dianne Watts said this year’s first annual Winterfest promises to be full of great activities and entertainment for our entire city to enjoy. The festival will feature some of BC’s hottest bands on the mainstage, including 99.3 the FOX Seeds Winners Daniel Wesley and State of Shock, plus an amazing array of winter fun activities for the whole family. The festival will take place Sat, Feb 9 at Central City Plaza, located at 102 Avenue and 135 Street. Gates open at 12:00 noon with the fire show slated for 6 pm and the concert finale at 10 pm.   The entire festival is free for the public.

The Province and the City of Victoria have agreed to expedite more than 170 new and upgrade housing units to reduce homelessness. The plan also includes relocation and expansion of the Streetlink emergency shelter. Mayor Alan Lowe said that fifty-five existing shelter beds at Streetlink will be relocated to a city-owned property at 525 Ellice St., on which a new development will provide 80 shelter beds. The site will also have approximately 24 new supportive housing units. Streetlink’s current site at 1634 Store St. will be redeveloped into 15 new supportive housing units, expanding on the existing 26 units at the adjoining Swift House. In addition, a provincially owned social housing site at 950 Humboldt St. will be redeveloped with an anticipated 53 new supportive housing units.

TWO-YEAR COUNTDOWN TO 2010

February 12 marks the two-year countdown to the Opening Ceremony for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Whistler and Vancouver. A variety of Olympic activities will take place in Whistler that promise to get locals and visitors in the spirit of the Games. The Whistler Arts Council will co-present WHISTLER CELEBRATION 2010™ with VANOC’s Cultural Olympiad, supported by the RMOW, for the month of February. Whistler’s festival will feature programming produced in partnership with community groups including the Whistler Museum, Whistler Film Festival, MY Place and Whistler Writers Group.Other entertainment will include film screenings at Skiers Plaza as well as snow sculpting on Whistler Mountain, a theatre workshop at Lost Lake and productions at MY Place throughout the month of February.
