BC Museum displays Bhangra costumes

The RBCM announced the five components of Free Spirit: Stories of You, Me and BC in November, and launched one of them — an interactive website www.freespiritbc.ca featuring The People’s History Project, a site where all British Columbians can share stories of living in this province. Through text, photographic, video and audio submissions, the searchable site will create a fresh chapter in B.C. history.
“We invite British Columbians from all regions of the province to contribute to The People’s History Project,” says RBCM CEO Pauline Rafferty.
Items connected to the Lower Mainland include: the Douglas Commission, the 1858 document read by James Douglas at Fort Langley that established British Columbia as a Crown Colony; and a traditional South Asian dance outfit worn at a recent Punjabi Bhangra festival in Vancouver.
A few stories from the Lower Mainland have already been submitted to The People’s History Project. For example, in her submission, Bonnie Kent recounts the humble beginnings of a family business that has thrived for three generations in the Greater Vancouver area.
