SOUTH EAST ASIAN Pacific Rim Voices Thurs Feb 3 7:30 pm Vancouver Opera brings Asian and western cultures together in Voices of the Pacific Rim, a recital of popular opera selections combined with traditional Asian songs, performed by rising young Asian Canadian opera singers. Celebrating and honouring the Chinese, Korean and Japanese communities. Soprano Jessica Cheung, tenor Sam Chung, lyric soprano Gina Oh and baritone Gene Wu, accompanied by Kinza Tyrrell on piano, will perform works by Puccini, Mozart and Strauss among others. AY-Laung Wang is an active recitalist whose superb musicianship, excellent technique, and great personal charm make her a favorite with audiences and congregations wherever she performs. She graduated from Trinity Western University where she excelled in her piano and conducting studies. While at Trinity Western University, she served with distinction as the assistant conductor to the TWU choirs. She continued her studies at UBC receiving a Masters of Music with top standing in organ performance. She also holds performer and teacher ARCT diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. Origami making Wed Jan 30 7pm for beginners Thurs Jan 31 7pm for expert Ancient Japanese art of paper folding, Origami derived from "ori" meaning "to fold", and "kami", meaning paper, and changed to voiced sound "gami". The goal of this art is to create a given result using geometric folds and crease patterns preferably without the use of gluing or cutting the paper medium. More Origami Wed Jan 30, 7pm-9pm This workshop is for beginners and intermediates. Japanese Origami Master, Mr. Satoshi Kamiya, a champion of the Third Origami Championship Tournament on the famous Japanese TV program has been invited to Vancouver to lead two Origami Workshops. Mr. Kamiya has won championships for four times, in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2004. Mr. Kamiya will demonstrate and provide Origami lessons. Small children are required to be accompanied by adults. Experience over twenty traditional Japanese heritage games and toys at the fourth annual Jan Ken Pon! Family Games Day. Samurai Assassin Thurs Jan 31, 2008 7pm The Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre (JCCC) movie night. This film is the first in a series of screening in 2008 to acknowledge the 140th anniversary of the bakumatsu and the birth of modern Japan. Directed by Okamoto Kihachi, starring Mifune Toshiro.
