An average of 17 people died every weekday commuting to work on overcrowded trains in Mumbai last year, figures released by the government indicate. Using India's Right to Information Act, The Times of London obtained figures showing there were 4,357 fatalities involving Mumbai's suburban rail network in 2008. The majority of deaths, 3,443, resulted from people being mowed down by trains while crossing the tracks. The second highest cause of death was passengers who fell or were pushed from train cars that have no doors and travel at 40 miles an hour, The Times reported. Forty-one people died after being bludgeoned by trackside poles while hanging out of overcrowded trains while power lines electrocuted 21 people who were riding on the roof of train cars.

Dara Singh, serving a life term for killing Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two young sons in 1999, has filed by proxy his nomination papers as an independent candidate in India’s upcoming elections. "A man named Nityananda Mohanta filed the nomination paper on behalf of Singh," returning officer Surath Chandra Mallick told IANS. "The nomination is likely to be rejected because it is not supported by any documents," he added. India's electoral laws bar anyone who has been jailed for two years from contesting elections. On Jan 22, 1999, a mob led by Dara Singh burnt alive Staines and his two sons, 10-year-old Philip and six-year-old Timothy, while they were asleep in their vehicle in Manoharpur, a village in Keonjhar district.

Stone-peltingSRINAGAR, India

Is stone pelting by mobs permissible in Islam? Religious and separatist circles in Jammu and Kashmir are busy debating the issue these days after a local cleric said stone pelting was not allowed in Islam. Police and security forces in the area have been facing severe stone pelting mobs, especially in the old city areas of summer capital Srinagar ever since the land row protests broke out over the allotment of forest land. Hundreds of protesters and security men have been injured across Kashmir during these protests and shutdowns. Typically, these situations see mobs indulging in heavy stone pelting at the security men who respond with batons and tear gas shells and in extreme situations even open fire to quell the mobs.
