Restaurant Review: Vij’s Railway Express

We got a delivery from Vij’s Railway Express which is food truck located sometimes  along 4th Avenue and the corner of 4th and Yew during the summer. Having never eaten at Vij’s I figured this might make for an interesting introductory experience to his foods.
When you think of Vij’s, I think cocktails, pricey meals, fancier foods, not a food truck. He didn’t try to cater to a different  audience. Give them a taste for “cheap” to pique their curiosity, then they come try the restaurant. Brilliant. The Butter Chicken Schnitzel jumped out at me. As one of his more popular options,  it was an interesting fusion of Indian and German food, both of which I enjoy.
The first thing that I noticed was the naan bread  wasn’t your traditional naan. It was pretty thin and it reminded me of Subway’s flat bread but thinner. I wasn’t really expecting traditional, but I do like my thick and doughy breads. The sauce had a surprising amount of spice which isn’t expected from a food truck. I liked this version of this sauce. The chicken was cut into long strips. It was breaded but was a little bit soggy and dry. Overall I loved the flavour of the sauce, but the rest was just a little disappointing.
I don’t know if I’d pay full price ($13) for a quick lunch. I’ll probably finally go to Vij’s restaurant to try a little bit of everything. He moved his main restaurant away from the Granville and 11th location. Hopefully the line ups aren’t as bad as they used to be. If you want a sample of what Vij has to offer without the restaurant experience and prices, then this is a good option. Just don’t expect it to be to the same level of quality.
